Module 5 Summary
Chapter 5 deals first with Push and Pull technologies. This sets the stage for the chapter, as these categories inform how information on the web is now disseminated. Some examples of push technology I have used are instant messaging, Facebook, and Instagram. Examples of Pull technologies I have used include podcasts and newsgroups. These types of sites make up what we know as Web 2.0. This “new Internet” is defined by user generated content. I have contributed to Web 2.0 by posting on sites like Facebook and Instagram.
The Pull technology I use most frequently in Podcasting. I am a subscriber to multiple podcast feeds, which means I use a podcatcher, through Apple, to automatically download newly released episodes of certain podcast feeds. This chapter also talks about online reputation management. The everyday user has almost unlimited power to push personal information out to anyone who is willing to pull it in. Because of this, it is important to be smart about what photos, videos, audio, and writings that one posts online. I have never felt comfortable posting about myself online. To this point, in recent years I haven’t been able to justify holding most social media accounts. Because of this, I have reduced my online presence to almost none.
